NLP language
Neuro-linguistic programming gave hypnosis a vocabulary. Used as a language kit it is sharp. Used as a complete theory of mind it overclaims. Liminal treats it as craft.
Where it came from
Bandler and Grinder, mid-1970s, modeling Fritz Perls, Virginia Satir, and Milton Erickson. The first books — The Structure of Magic — are still worth reading as a study of how therapists talk. What followed (eye-accessing diagnostics, ‘preferred representational systems’ as a law, overnight phobia cures as a brand) often outran the evidence.
Be a grown-up about this if you sell audio. Eye-accessing cues are not a reliable diagnostic. Matching someone’s ‘visual language’ is not a proven accelerator. Anchoring is classical conditioning with better marketing. Reframing is also in CBT. The Milton Model is, frankly, a gift: it is Erickson’s language written down so you can practice it.
Two models, opposite jobs
The Meta Model challenges deletions, generalizations, and distortions. ‘I can’t’ → ‘What would happen if you did?’ ‘They don’t respect me’ → ‘Who, specifically?’ This is live coaching. It does not belong as a barrage of questions on a recorded track.
The Milton Model is the Meta Model run in reverse: artful vagueness, nominalizations, unspecified verbs, presuppositions, embedded commands, quotes, metaphors. The listener fills in the blanks with their own life. That is why it works on audio, and why it is also easy to abuse. If you cannot say the claim plainly in a footnote, do not smuggle it in a hypnotic sentence.
Process tools that earn their keep
Well-formed outcomes: stated in the positive, sensory-specific, self-initiated, contextualized, with an ecology check (what does the old pattern still do for them?). If you skip ecology, the change bounces. Habit tracks that ignore secondary gain are why people feel stupid for ‘failing’ a recording.
Future-pacing: rehearse a specific future scene, then walk back to now. Anchoring, used modestly: pair a state with a cue they will actually meet (hand on a doorknob, first sip of water). Submodalities (near/far, bright/dim) overlap with imagery rescripting; invite, don’t order the movie to change.
In the studio, patterns are tags on a block — so you can see whether you have only been writing pretty sentences, or actually pacing, presupposing, and future-pacing.
